Rakesh and Pritisha's Bele and Ota Patties with Mint Chutney

Ingredients for the Bele and Ota Patties:

1.5 cups yellow cassava, cooked and mashed
½ cup blanched and chopped bele (island spinach)
½ cup ota tips, flash fried in a pan
1 tbsp garlic, minced
1 tbsp ginger, minced
1 chilli, fine chopped (optional)
1 capsicum, finely diced
1 onion, fine diced
Salt to taste

Ingredients for the Mint Chutney:

¼ cup mint
2 tomatoes, chopped
½ green chilli, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
Salt to taste


Method for the Bele and Ota Patties:

  1. Mix mashed cassava, bele, ota and onion with ginger and garlic.
  2. Add capsicum and chilli then season with salt and pepper.
  3. Make the mix into patties.
  4. Fry for 2-3 minutes each side.

Method for the Mint Chutney:

  1. To make chutney, mix all ingredients together.
  2. Make into paste with mortar and pestle.
  3. Place patties on plate and top with chutney.
  4. Serve.
